The horse manure problem of 1894 refers to a major urban crisis during the late 19th century when cities like New York and London relied heavily on horses for transportation. With thousands of horses producing tons of manure daily, streets became unsanitary and overwhelmed, posing serious health and environmental risks. Experts feared that cities would be buried in waste within decades, sparking intense concern about urban sustainability. Ironically, the problem was eventually solved not by better waste management, but by the rise of the automobile, which replaced horse-drawn transport.
