Lachit Borphukan, the legendary Ahom general of Assam, is remembered as a symbol of patriotism and valor in Indian history. He is best known for leading the Ahom army to a decisive victory against the mighty Mughal forces at the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, fought on the Brahmaputra River. Despite being severely ill, Lachit personally inspired his soldiers by commanding from the frontline, famously declaring that the duty to protect one’s motherland is greater than the concern for one’s own life. His courage not only safeguarded Assam’s sovereignty but also preserved its rich culture and traditions from Mughal domination. Today, he is honored as a national hero, and the Lachit Divas (celebrated on November 24) keeps alive his legacy of bravery, leadership, and unwavering love for the motherland.
