Health

Health, according to the World Health Organization, is "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity. A variety of definitions have been used for different purposes over time. Health can be promoted by encouraging healthful activities, such as regular physical exercise, and by reducing or avoiding unhealthful activities or situations.

FAINTING OR SLUMPING IN THE BATHROOM

f4d6de_93e31ad624e54e7a9b052818499032b6_mv2.webp

What is the cause?

We always hear of people who have a stroke after a fall in the bath.

Why have we not heard of falling elsewhere?

When I took part in a healthy lifestyle course, a National Sports Council Professor, who also participated in the course, advised that:

The head should not be washed first in the process of taking a bath (even washing of the hair)

Other parts of the body should be cleaned first.

This is because when the head is wet & cold, blood will flow to the head to warm it up.

If the blood vessels have narrowed, it is likely to cause the blood vessels to rupture.

Since it usually happens in the bathroom, be sure to raise awareness to avoid this happening again.

CORRECT PROCESS OF BATH TAKING:

1. Start the wetness from the sole of the foot.

2. Progress to the Small legs, the thigh, abdomen & then shoulder.

3. At this point, pause for 5-10 seconds.

4. A feeling like steam/wind overflowing from the body may be observed; & then take a shower as usual.

WISDOM:

When a glass is filled with hot water & then suddenly emptied & filled with cold water; what happens?

The glass will burst!!

Then, with regards to the human body, what happens?

Naturally, the body temperature is very hot, whereas the water is very cold, a cold shower on the body or the head directly would suddenly trap the wind, or deaden it, because the blood vessels got broken.

This is why people often suddenly fall over in the bathroom; due to the wrong bathing method. And that often causes a stroke or causes a migraine.

ADVICE:

This bathing method is suitable for all ages, especially those with Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol & Migraine/Headache

Heart Attack

download.jpg

Doctors and assistants in Singapore slapped the patient's inner elbow and he recovered after about 2 minutes.

This video gives you advice on emergency situations to pay attention to heart patients and how to deal with a heart attack that usually happens suddenly.

Many become so helpless and die on the way to the hospital.

Please remember:

1. By slapping the inner elbow of the left hand as shown in the video, it stimulates the three acupressure points around the left side which are related to the heart and lungs.

2. Slapping will speed up blood circulation, which makes the person feel warm and stops sweating.

You need to know that a heart attack is due to a blockage of blood circulation. By tapping and slapping the inner elbow of the hand, you can increase body temperature, avoid aggregation, and facilitate blood circulation. Then immediately take the person to the hospital.

It is good to pat the inside of the left elbow every day as it can prevent any heart attack.

The Post-COVID Recovery Diet

image34_120721064436_1200x675.jpg

Beating back the SARS-CoV-2 virus is no mean feat, but the process of regaining your full health can be a long, arduous journey too. Due to lingering after-effects that vary in intensity from person to person, COVID-19 can continue to make you feel poorly, even after testing negative.

Fatigue, inflammation, pulmonary fibrosis—scarring on the lungs leading to shortness of breath, chronic fatigue and dry cough—hair loss, joint pain, insomnia and feelings of depression and anxiety, are just some of the symptoms you might be feeling. Here are some foods that can help a speedy recovery.

Sprouted Chickpeas

High bioavailability of nutrients in chickpea sprouts makes this an ideal dietary element during recovery. Not only do sprouted chickpeas have an amino acid profile that is better suited to digestion than unsprouted ones, their phytic acid content is also low thereby enhancing our ability to easily absorb its vitamins and minerals. Chickpeas are also a great source of fibre. Studies reveal that a high-fibre diet is related to lower levels of inflammatory cytokines and enhanced levels of short chain fatty acids—a key factor in maintaining healthy gut microbiota, which plays an important role in better immunity. Sprouts are also rich in critical B and C vitamins, which supports our energy production and tissue-repair abilities.

Amaranth

Muscle wasting, body aches and exhaustion are commonly seen due to hypermetabolism and excessive nitrogen loss during the COVID infection. To overcome this, try amaranth which offers good quality protein, iron, selenium and magnesium. Protein and selenium are also needed for the antibodies we make as an immune response. This pseudo-cereal also provides a balance of nutrients that reduces hair loss after COVID.

Pomegranate

Pomegranates are rich in punicalagins and punicic acid both of which have high antioxidant properties. This nutrient-packed fruit helps restore respiratory strength by boosting the concentration of nitrates in the blood and its powerful anti-inflammatory compounds aid in reducing joint pain and swelling.

Almonds

Healthy fats in almonds are a rich source of oleic acid, which helps stabilize high blood-sugar levels and fights inflammation—one of the most harmful long-term effects of the COVID virus. Just about 20 almonds a day can provide 37 per cent of vitamin E and 20 per cent of magnesium requirements, both essential for recuperation. Vitamin E helps protect our cells from oxidative damage while magnesium increases energy and muscle strength, boosts restful sleep and reduces stress. Higher magnesium intake is also linked to reduced symptoms of depression.

Ginger

Packed with potent metabolites including gingerols and shogaols, ginger is traditionally used as a flu fighter and has been found to help control high blood sugar post-COVID. Ginger juice helps in reducing mucous and soothing a sore throat. It improves blood circulation and cell oxygenation and is a natural prebiotic, meaning it acts as food for good gut bacteria.

Sweet corn vs Desi Bhutta:

Which is healthier?

Be it sweet corn or roadside desi bhutta (corn on the cob), both have their own

charm. But when it comes to their impact on one’s health, one variety is found to

be better than the other. So, what should you eat — sweet corn or bhutta?

Celebrity nutritionist Munmun Ganeriwal shared a long post on social media recently,

to talk about the difference between sweet corn and desi roasted corn.

Sweet corn, said Ganeriwal, is grown from imported hybrid seeds that need “a lot of resources to grow”. Its nutrient density is also compromised while being high on sugar. “…it requires liberal use of pesticides. With larger food miles in procuring these seeds, its nutrient density is compromised and environmental load is high. And one cannot overlook the high sugar content that it has along with the most negligible fibre content,” the nutritionist wrote.

Indigenous corn, on the other hand, comes in more than 3000 varieties. They can be grown with minimal resources of water and manure, the nutritionist said. “[Indigenous corn varieties] act as pest repellents when inter-cropped with other crops hence ensuring low use of pesticides. Unlike sweet corn, they are harvested after attaining maturity, hence the sugar has been converted into complex starch which does not spike up the blood sugar levels in the human body.”

The fibre content in desi corn also improves blood glucose control and keeps the digestive tract in good condition, she further said. “Unlike sweet corn which is available around the year, the desi variety is available only during the rains. So make the most of it now and dig into them while the rains last,” Ganeriwal added.

Are soups and salads healthy?

Know what experts say

Hunger pangs are often difficult to ward off. They become especially challenging

when you are on a weight-loss journey, and that is when you may end up consuming

unhealthy foods like chips or fried snacks. However, a lot of people prefer soups and

salads to satiate their cravings as they are considered a healthier alternative.

But, experts point out that soups and salads are not always a healthy choice and you need to keep some important things in mind before consuming them.

“I don’t recommend having soups or salads as the three main meals as they don’t make a balanced meal. It’s advisable to stick to them only for breakfast or dinner. For lunch, you should consume carbohydrates like rice, wheat, jowar or millet,” nutritionist Soumya B Hegde told indianexpress.com.

She added that soups and salads are “good for people who want to lose fat or weight quickly”. “Make healthy and thick soups like mushroom soup, broccoli soup or mixed vegetable soup. If you are aiming to make a healthy soup for weight loss, avoid adding sugar, honey, corn or butter as they have lots of calories,” she advised, adding that toppings like mayonnaise “will only add extra calories. The total calorie intake will increase, defeating the purpose of salads”.

However, to add taste to your salads, she suggested adding lemon juice and some salt. “You can also sauté your salads and add some paneer, tofu or soya chunks to add nutrition in them,” she added.

If you are on a weight loss journey, “quantify your nutrition by measuring the carbohydrates, proteins and vegetables as per your requirements”.

Dr Siddhant Bhargava, food, lifestyle and wellness expert, also took to Instagram to share how you can make your soups and salads healthy.

“Managing to eat right can be tricky, and knowing what makes meals 100 per cent healthy is trickier! Here’s how you can do right with your soup and salad combination,” he captioned the post.

Soups and salads “may be packed with vitamins and minerals, but unless made correctly this combination doesn’t work”, he said. Take a look.

He suggested the following ways to make healthy soups and salads:

1.      Make sure the vegetables are always cut fresh and you’re consuming them as close to cutting.

2.      Make sure your salad always has some source of protein (beans, dal, tofu, paneer, egg, chicken fish).

3.      Add a source of super healthy fats (nuts or seeds).

4.      Make sure you’re dressing is not store-bought.

5.      Your soup should be without sugar and filled with vegetables.

No corn starch in the soup.

Can pineapple aid digestion?
Find out here

Besides being a really tasty tropical fruit, pineapple has many benefits, too.

Most importantly, it aids digestion.

In an Instagram video, celebrity nutritionist Kinita Kadakia Patel shared how an

enzyme found in this fruit can help in digestion. The enzyme is bromelain which also helps with a lot of digestive issues, she said.

This enzyme breaks down protein molecules into amino acids and small peptides, which can be absorbed easily across the small intestine, according to Healthline.

Pineapple can also help boost immunity. It is rich in vitamin C, which works as a “great antioxidant and anti-inflammatory”, she added. Pineapple also contains vitamin A, vitamin K, phosphorus, zinc and calcium.

Not just the fruit, the tough peel of the fruit is also loaded with benefits. Besides containing bromelain and vitamin C, the peel is known to be teeth and bone strengthener since it is rich in manganese. Here’s how you can consume pineapple peel.

How to eat pineapple

Kinita suggested adding only a little bit of pineapple pieces — about 50 gm — to your salad. Else, one can add it to hung curd. This is the “best way to eat pineapple”, according to the nutritionist.
